Beastie Shaped Baked Flour Tortilla Chips – A Spooky Halloween Snack

Don’t let the ghouls, goblins, ghosts and other beasties spook you this Halloween. At least not if they’re these baked flour tortilla chip monsters. These snack chips are super easy to make, versatile and instead of being afraid, the kids will gobble up the monsters this year. (The adults make pretty quick work of them, too!)

This is a great way to get the little ones involved in cooking. Kids love to help in the kitchen. Let them pick and cut out the shapes that they want for the chips. Not only will they be more willing to eat them, but everyone gets to have fun while you’re at it. The recipe will work just as well if you just slice your tortillas into wedges, but what’s not to love about eating your own, handmade critters and spooks?

We paired these chips with Turkish style hummus, so there was no need to add anything but the salt, but if you’d like to add a little more flavor to the chips themselves, try adding some ranch powder or seasoned salt instead of the kosher salt. Just sprinkle it on before you toss them in the oven.

We have a bunch of Halloween cookie cutters, so we went with bats, owls, crescent moons and ghosts.  You can go with whatever makes you happy. Pick a shape, cut ’em out and you’ll have a fresh batch of oven baked flour tortilla chips shaped like monsters, Jack-O-lanterns or any other creepy thing your heart desires.

Aren’t they cute?

Ingredients

  • 3 (8-inch) flour tortillas
  • Olive oil
  • Kosher salt
  • Hummus or other dip, for... Dipping what else?. (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Cut spooky Halloween shapes from tortillas with cookie cutters or a very sharp paring knife. Brush each cutout on both sides with olive oil and arrange in a single layer on two baking sheets. Sprinkle liberally with kosher salt.
  2. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until crisp and very lightly browned. Remove from oven and cool completely before serving.

Notes

Watch these guys carefully in the oven! The time listed is an approximation. These will cook much more quickly if you use complex shapes or smaller cutters. Just keep an eye on them and you'll be fine.

What I would have done differently had I thought of it at the time:

I think I’m going to try adding some flavor to the chips next time. My first thoughts are ranch powder, seasoned salt or maybe barbecue rub with a little ancho chili powder, but the list definitely doesn’t stop there. These things are just begging for some experimentation!
